Lead-acid, AGM, gel or lithium battery, which one to choose based on your system? There is no wrong answer. In fact, it is a matter of choosing it according to your needs. To help you find your way, we have put together a list of the advantages and disadvantages of each:
Lead-acid battery:
It is the most common battery in the world. Inside, there are acid plates which act as an energy reservoir. Distilled water circulates inside to facilitate the conduction of electricity.
Advantages Disadvantages:
-Easy to maintain - Shorter life than lithium and AGM type batteries.
-The least expensive - Subject to temperature changes, care must be taken to ensure that it does not freeze in winter.
- Easily recycled In summer, it can emit gases. It is recommended not to store it in a closed place.
or otherwise make a ventilation hole to avoid the risk of poisoning.
We are dealers of Rolls batteries, one of the rare companies in North America to design and manufacture its batteries in Canada.

Battery AGM:
It is also a maintenance-free battery. Inside we find fiberglass to conduct electricity between the plates.
Advantages: Disadvantages:
- Maintenance free. - More expensive than lead-acid batteries.
- Does not produce fumes - Overcharging can cause premature wear of the battery.
- Has greater load capacity
than lead-acid or gel batteries
- Resists the cold
Gel battery:
Maintenance-free battery, it transfers its electrolytes via a gel composed of sulfuric acid and silicate. It is mainly found in electrical devices such as wheelchairs or scooters.
Advantages: Disadvantages:
- Maintenance free - More expensive than lead-acid or AGM batteries.
- Does not produce fumes - Recharges more slowly.
- Has greater charging capacity - Overcharging can cause premature battery wear.
than lead-acid or AGM batteries
- Heat resistant
Lithium battery:
A new player in the world of batteries, lithium batteries have excellent reserve capacity (for comparison, they have a fraction of the weight and size of a lead-acid battery with similar technical specifications).
This is the longest-lasting battery and the most suitable for those who would like to have full control over their system thanks to the possibility of Bluetooth. It can discharge almost completely without consequences and recharges very quickly.
Advantages: Disadvantages:
- Maintenance free - Most expensive battery
- Does not produce fumes - Several models cannot be charged in the cold.
- Has greater load capacity
than all other batteries
- Easily transported
- Can have Bluetooth and options
like self-heating
Among our selection of lithium batteries, we find several from Volthium. This is a local company that exclusively designs and programs lithium batteries. To see our selection: https://boutique.altenergie.ca/lithium
As we said in this previous article Solar energy system: Place yourself on your X , 5 factors should guide your choice:
- Its need for production and energy reserves,
- the space available;
- Its amperage capacity per hour
- the time(s) in the year when it will be used;
- and incidentally, if we will need to move it or have certain functionalities to better control its performance.
